The gang up in Oregon has always been known for innovative products. A little over a year ago, Nike introduced their LunarLite Foam technology in two shoes: The LunarTrainer and LunarRacer. The lightweight and responsively cushioned foam material was popular among competitive runners.

A year later, Nike has introduced the LunarGlide – a more functional training shoes designed for neutral to moderately over-pronatated feet, and will accommodate a larger population of runners.

The LunarGlide uses the same space-age super lightweight LunarLite Foam as the LunarTrainer and LunarRacer do, but they are using it in an adaptive, patent-pending support system they are calling Dynamic Support. This innovative approach to stabilizing the foot involves a soft and cushioned core that is cradled by a more structured and firmer foam carrier.

The LunarLite Foam core is shaped like a wedge, with the thickest part of the wedge on the outside of the foot. Since this material is softer than the orange firm foam carrier, it slows the rate at which the foot pronates.

Traditionally, people had to choose between getting a neutral shoe or getting a stability shoe based on their foot type. With Nike's innovative approach to a dynamic and adaptive stability system, the shoe works for a range of foot types. But what is really intriguing about the Dynamic Support system is that it will begin to stabilize the foot more as the runner fatigues over time. So you may have a neutral foot when being fit for a shoe, but at mile 19 of a training run or marathon, you're muscles and joints will react a lot differently to your body weight than when your fresh. So the shoe can adapt to a range of foot types and runners, but can also adapt to the changes that runners experience during a single run.

The Dynamic Support System is really what separates the LunarGlide from other shoes on the Market, but it also boasts other features that make it a great shoe!

LunarLite Foam: This material, used on the LunarTrainer and LunarRacer is a unique material that is extremely soft and cushioned, but also returns energy at a higher rate than traditional foam midsoles.

FlyWire Technology: FlyWire is a technology that Nike uses in the upper of a number of shoes, for a number of sports including running, basketball and tennis. FlyWire allows shoe designers to shed an unprecedented amount of weight without compromising the stability and support of the upper. FlyWire is a super strong and lightweight thread that is woven together and used as upper panels on various models in Nike's Footwear Line.

Women's Specific Design: Nike recognized that Women weight 10 to 15 percent less than men, and therefore will have less mass to compress the midsole. So the heel in the women's LunarGlide is made with a softer foam that will provide the softer cushioning that women need.

Nike also recognized that women have a greater variance in their heel width than men do. In order to accommodate the vast differences Nike decided to use a external heel skeleton rather than the solid heel cup that the men's version uses. The heel skeleton offers more flexibility and customization to accommodate women's heels while providing the desired fit and stability.

Fluid Recover Drink

How Are You Going To Feel Tomorrow?

I have to admit that for years I neglected the importance of nutrition on running. I would eat a healthy, balanced diet throughout the day and avoided soft drinks, junk food and all those “bad” things. But while I was running, I really didn't do anything. If there was a water fountain that popped up along a running route, I would stop and take a couple of sips, but I never really was concerned with all that nutrition stuff, and I definitely was not interested in carrying one of those “silly waterbottle packs.” So amid the 80, 90, 100+ mile weeks I was running the summers before college, I was punishing my body internally by not taking care of hydration, energy replacement, and recovery.

I wound up with kidney stones at the age of 23.

Since then, I have been a lot more conscientious of hydration while running. But it wasn't until recently that I really thought about recovery, and how fueling your body with the best balance and quality of carbs and proteins can really help your body mend and repair itself more quickly and efficiently.

Recently Richard Smith, one of the founders of a new product we are carrying, Fluid, came out for one of our fun runs to do the workout & provide samples for all in attendance. Everyone loved it the samples, and gave feedback that they felt great the next morning after the workout! You can now find this awesome product in our newly revamped nutrition section in the store!

Anyway, I hammered a hard workout on the hills and really felt spent afterwards. I was certain that the next morning would be painful at the very least. I enjoyed about two servings of the lightly flavored recovery drink, that was actually really refreshing and not thick and gross like a lot of protein shakes. I was really amazed the next day when I got out of bed and had NO leg soreness. In fact, I felt really fresh and headed out for a comfortable 6 mile run. Typically the first two to three miles of a recovery run after a hard workout are really difficult for me, as my legs are really stiff and sluggish. So I was pleasantly surprised how fresh I felt that morning!

I have used the Fluid product on a number of hard workouts since that day, and I have experienced the same great results each time. I have recommended the product to everyone I have run with since. I can't say enough good things about this all natural recovery drink!

Mid-year shoe releases

As running technology progresses and new materials, fabrics, and foams are being used to improve the performances of running products, we are also starting to see a growth in natural and eco-friendly materials.

One of the newest materials to make its way into the running market is, you guessed it, bamboo. I know, it doesn't really make sense but bamboo has bam”boomed” into the performance running scene, making appearances as the soft and supple fabric in performance running socks, shirts, shorts and hats. But how do you make one of the hardest and most resilient plants on the planet into a soft, breathable, and comfortable fabric?

Well, actually, its a complicated process which I'm not going to get into the details, but you can read all about it here Essentially, they soak the leaves and soft inner pith of the bamboo shoots in a chemical solution that turns it into a liquid, which is pushed through a sieve and it is hardened into a thread. From that point they spool it and its ready to make clothes with!

But why use bamboo and not the traditional synthetic fabrics like CoolMax?

There are a lot of benefits to using bamboo:

  • Bamboo is grown without fertilizers or pesticides.
  • Bamboo is luxuriously soft and feels like silky cashmere.
  • Bamboo is one of the worlds fastest growing plants. It's a grass, so once it is cut it regenerates without replanting (just like your home lawn).
  • Bamboo is eco-friendly – absorbing 35% more carbon dioxide than equivalent stands of trees.

And more importantly for Running and exercise:

  • Bamboo absorbs 60% more water than cotton.
  • Bamboo is extremely breathable due to the porous nature of the fiber.
  • Bamboo is thermo-regulating, keeping your cooler in warmer weather and warmer in cooler weather.
  • Bamboo is hypoallergenic.

All of those benefits have made bamboo one of the best choices for performance fabrics in running and exercise apparel.
